Detoxification, Trauma Release, and Recovery from Addictions

The Network Acupuncture®/NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) Auricular Acupuncture protocol helps people recover from drug and alcohol dependencies. It is used in more than 1000 clinics throughout the United States and internationally and can decrease cravings for drugs, foods, and alcohol and reduce withdrawal symptoms, relieve tension, and help people relax.

In the early 1970’s H.L. Wen, MD., a neurosurgeon from South China, was preparing to use electro-acupuncture as surgical analgesia. The patient, who happened to be experiencing withdrawal symptoms from opium at the time, reported his withdrawal symptoms had disappeared. Dr. Wen later searched the hospital for other patients experiencing withdrawal symptoms. He performed his pre-operative procedures on them and their symptoms also ceased.  Acu-detox was born!

Dr. Michael Smith from Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx added additional points to and developed the NADA protocol. Yale University’s School of Internal Medicine published a research report in August 2000 (Archives of Internal Medicine) that showed the effectiveness of the NADA protocol in the treatment of cocaine, heroin and methadone addiction.  It is also effectively utilized in the treatment of alcohol, tobacco, food, and marijuana addictions.

The Network Acupuncture®/NADA protocol has been used to treat first responders and victims after the 911 World Trade Center attacks and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  A Walter Reed Army Medical Center study is measuring the effects of the NADA protocol on Iraq war veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) with positive results. One of the Acupuncturists involved in the study preliminarily reported that her patients experienced improved digestion, less fear, improved sleep, and a return to social activities.

"Evan Shepherd Reiff, L.Ac. is a practitioner with  extensive experience working with people in need as evidenced by the depth of his compassion as well as his NADA Acupuncture skills shown at Homeward Bound, Inc., a dual-diagnosis detoxification/crisis stabilization and treatment facility. His work in our men’s, women’s, and HIV-AIDS units was exemplary.  I strongly recommend Evan for this work as a private Licensed Acupuncturist or at a treatment facility implementing the acu-detox protocol for detoxification, trauma, and recovery from addictions." Dr. Susana E. Méndez, L.Ac, LCDC, Ma.OM, Dipl.OM, CAS, ABMPP, Assistant Executive Director, Homeward Bound Inc., National & International trainer for NADA
